Frequently asked questions about Electrolysis & Laser Hair Removal in Beverly, Massachusetts

ELECTROLYSIS

Q: What does Electrolysis feel like?

A:
Most patients describe the feeling as a hot little mosquito bite. Tolerances do vary from person to person. Being relaxed before a treatment helps a great deal, as does avoiding caffeine and sugar prior to your treatment. Drinking plenty of water 2-3 days before a treatment is also helpful to hydrate the hair follicles. A topical anesthetic is also available for extremely sensitive patients.
Q: How many Electrolysis treatments are required?

A:
The number of treatments necessary varies with each client and may range from 15 minutes up to an hour. Many factors contribute to a personalized treatment program; previous use of temporary hair removal methods, heredity, hormone function and certain medications are always taken into consideration when designing a treatment plan to achieve optimum results.
Q: How often do I need to have an Electrolysis treatment?

A:
If you tweeze or shave daily or even weekly, then you will need to come in weekly for an appointment. If, on the other hand, you only notice hairs occasionally, it is more likely you will start out coming in about every two to three to four weeks. Most of the time and expense is in the first 4-6 months, then commonly appointments start to space out and the time per treatment is also shorter.
Q: What will the area look like after an Electrolysis treatment?

A:
The area may be pink and a little swollen for about thirty minutes to a few hours. Sometimes irritation can develop at the site of your treatment, which generally is caused by bacteria commonly found on your hands. Following your after treatment instructions is important and complete post care instructions are provided to each patient.
Q: Are there any limitations on hair or skin color with Electrolysis treatments?

A:
Electrolysis benefits any skin or hair type for people of all ages, male or female and the transgender individual.
Q: Is tweezing bad?

A:
Tweezing can cause scar tissue and stimulate the hair to grow back stronger and coarser.
Q: Is waxing bad?

A:
Waxing basically is large scale tweezing that negatively stimulates the root causing ingrown hairs, whiteheads, and may cause contact dermatitis (skin infections).
Q: Is shaving bad?

A:
Shaving causes stigmatizing stubble that is considered socially unacceptable and can cause a nightmare of ingrown hairs.
Q: Are depilatories bad?

A:
Depilatories can burn and discolor the skin.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Q: How many treatments does it take to clear an area?

A:
On average 5-6 treatments are needed to significantly reduce hair growth. Many patients are very happy with their results in as few as 3 treatments, while others may need a full 6 treatment schedule. Depending on the hair, skin and area, a treatment schedule of 7-8 treatments may be desirable.
Q: Is Laser Hair Removal permanent?

A:
With Laser Hair Removal you can expect an 80% – 90% permanent reduction in the amount of hair.
Q: Can any area of the body be treated?

A:
Yes, with the exception of the eyelashes and shaping of the eyebrows.
Q: Is the treatment uncomfortable?

A:
A hot stinging sensation is a good description of the way it feels during treatment. However, most patients who have waxed or have had Electrolysis report that it feels less uncomfortable than those types of treatments. A topical anesthetic may be applied prior to treatment that makes your treatment more comfortable as well.
Q: How long will the treatment last?

A:
Treatments may last anywhere from a quick 1-2 minute session for small areas or up to one hour for larger areas. Underarms and bikini areas are usually treated in approximately 5-10 minutes; backs, arms and legs can take up to an hour.
Q: What will the area look like immediately following treatment?

A:
The skin may be pinkish to reddish but will return rather rapidly to its natural color quickly usually within an hour or two. Many patients find themselves heading off to the mall right after their treatment. On larger areas, such as the back or bikini area, the pinkish look to the skin may last for a day or two.
